Healthy bliss balls to keep your creative energy high

Try these healthy, gluten-free, yummy bliss balls that will keep your creative energy levels high all afternoon.

Being in a self-imposed lockdown is very different from being in a COVID lockdown.
I’m in self-imposed lockdown, I choose to spend weeks in the studio while I paint for my forthcoming art exhibition in August.
Plus, even though I live only two hours up the road from Sydney, while we are not ‘officially in lockdown, we are with you in solidarity.
I thought I would share what has been helping to keep my creative energy high while I have spent weeks wearing raggy, paint-covered clothes, rarely brushing my hair, and never wearing make-up. Come to think of it, the only time I leave my house is to ride or walk to the local shops. Of course, the difference is, there is a method in my madness because I’m deep in the process of making art. I also know so many of us are using the time in lockdown to make art, which makes my heart leap with joy.
Here is what I do (almost) daily: ( I say almost, because, let’s be real, some days for whatever reason, it just doesn’t happen and that is OK)!
- Warm lemon water as soon as I get up.
- 5 – 10 mins yoga stretching
- 2 pages in my journal
- 10 mins meditation (most mornings)
I have done this for years, and I will neglect other things, like cleaning up the breakfast dishes, and that hair brushing thingo, just to do these three top things + sometimes meditation every day.
PLUS I have a secret afternoon weapon – a super easy, quick, delicious and healthy, bliss ball snack to keep my creative energy high all afternoon.
Here is the recipe:
1 cup of pitted dates
1 cup of almond meal
1/3 cup raw cacao powder (Sometimes I add a teaspoon of Macca powder if I have some – for extra juz).
2 tablespoons of chia seeds
1/3 cup of organic virgin coconut oil
1/2 cup natural shredded coconut
Extra shredded coconut, pistachios or flaxseed, anything that takes your fancy to roll the balls.
- Soak the dates in warm water for 15 minutes to soften.
- Add the almond meal, cacao, shredded coconut, chia seeds, and oil into a blender and whiz until a smooth consistency.
- Add dates and a little water and whiz again, ensure all the dates are blended smooth.
- Let the mixture sit for 10 – 15 minutes
- Roll the mixture into bite-size balls
- Roll the balls into the extra shredded coconut, pistachios, etc.
TIP: At this point, I am super impatient, I just want to eat them, so I place the extra shredded coconut into a container, placing 4 – 5 balls at a time into the container, place on the lid, gently turn upside down and shake so the balls get an even coverage of the topping.
Finally, whack them in the fridge for a bit. The result is healthy, gluten-free, yummy balls that will keep your creative energy levels high all afternoon.
If you don’t love a date, try apricots instead, they are equally delicious.
